San Diego police say a 12-year-old boy scout is believed to have shot himself to death with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his upper body.

It happened at a boy scout summer camp outing on Fiesta Island Monday morning. The boy was a 12-year-old from Las Vegas who was attending the week-long Boy Scout summer camp that has been held in San Diego fro 20 years.

Police and paramedics were called to the 1000 block of Fiesta Island Road near East Mission Bay Drive shortly after 7:30 this morning. The 9-1-1 caller reportedly told police it was an attempted suicide.

A police spokesman says the boy died at the scene. A gun was recovered in a tent. Police were trying to determine where the gun came from.

Police say the boy's father was a chaperone for the Boy Scout outing.
