A possibly suicidal man armed with a gun was wounded Wednesday in an officer-involved shooting near De Anza Cove at Mission Bay.
It started shortly after 11 a.m. when police got a report that a man was in a car and had at least one gun and was making unspecified threats in the 2800 block of North Mission Bay Drive.
Officers tried to persuade the man to drop the weapon and surrender for nearly an hour before he started pointing his gun toward a police helicopter and then shots were fired and the man was wounded. A police spokesman says it was unclear whether the man was wounded by police gunfire or whether he shot himself.
The cops eventually took him into custody and he was rushed to a hospital but his condition was not immediately available.
Initial reports indicated that the man may have had intentions of killing himself.
