A suspected drunk driving crash shut down the main gate at Naval Air Station North Island Tuesday morning, backing up traffic for miles during rush hour.

The city reported on its Facebook page at about 5:30 a.m. that a civilian had damaged the NASNI’s main entrance on 3rd Street. All traffic was being diverted to NASNI’s two other gates at Ocean Boulevard and First Street.

The gate reopened by 7 a.m., but traffic was still backed up onto the Coronado Bridge.

The circumstances of the crash were not confirmed.

Naval Air Station North Island is one of several installations throughout the San Diego area that make up Naval Base Coronado.
