A 28-year-old man was killed Sunday during a fight with another man in the Gaslamp area of downtown San Diego.
The incident occurred at about 1 a.m. Sunday outside the Encore Champagne Bar & Dining Room.
Jasmin Nelson is visiting from Northern California and happened to be in the area.
"I think it's sad," Nelson said. "It's pretty scary."
Officers in the 500 block of F Street were flagged down by a concerned citizen and found the victim on the sidewalk unresponsive, said San Diego police Lt. Manuel Del Toro.
Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he later died. A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was in a verbal and physical confrontation at 500 F. St., after leaving a local business in the Gaslamp area, Del Toro said.
"It totally turns you off from the scene down here," Nelson explained. "You're like, 'Geez, it's getting kind of crazy down here.' It kind of deters you from doing what you want to do and hang out with your friends and have a good time. You don't expect to see stuff like that."
The man believed to have been involved in the fight left the area in a hurry.
The suspect was described as a black male between ages 28 and 30, weighing about 170 pounds with long dreadlocks. He was last seen wearing a green shirt, sagging pants with underwear exposed, the police lieutenant said.
San Diego police homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the fight to call them at (619) 531-2293.
