Police opened fire on an East Village commercial building where a possibly suicidal man had apparently holed up in a third- floor room, possibly armed with a military-style rifle. Officers fired about a dozen shots in the 900 block of Broadway about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday killing the man. Officers had taken up positions around the building, which houses the bar Hodads on the ground floor, and closed the busy east-west thoroughfare in front of it along with traffic lanes on nearby streets. The suspect was described as about 50 and possibly distraught and suicidal. During the standoff, he occasionally pointed what was believed to be an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle out of a window.
