Witnesses rushed to extricate a driver after his car went off Interstate-15 in the Deer Springs area of north San Diego County overnight Monday and spilled down an embankment.
Witnesses said the man was weaving in and out of traffic at about midnight when he lost control and skidded off the side of the freeway and down the embankment near Deer Springs Road.
Several people rushed down and pulled the man out of the mangled car before Deer Springs firefighters and California Highway Patrol officers arrived on scene.
The man was taken to Palomar Medical Center with traumatic injuries.
He allegedly told authorities he had to more passengers in the car, which prompted an air and ground search. However, he later recanted that and said he was alone and was driving to Fontana. Witnessed said he appeared intoxicated.
CHP is investigating.
