The morning after a five acre fire threatened homes in the Carlton Hills area of Santee, smaller fires broke out in the area Wednesday morning thanks to strong winds. About a dozen homeowners evacuated as a precaution but there were no confirmed reports of any damage to any homes or structures.

On Tuesday, it took a couple of hours to knock down a brush fire very close to Carlton Oaks Golf Course in Santee that broke out around 3 p.m. Tuesday.  For a while homes along Willowgrove Avenue were in danger as black smoke and hot flames licked up the side of trees and thick brush along the San Diego River. Golfers stayed inside the club house while smoke poured onto the fairways. Water dropping helicopters used Santee lakes and the water hazards on the golf course as sources to fight the fire. No evacuation orders were given but some residents were told to be ready. Strong winds earlier in the day began to die down which gave firefighters the break they needed to get the fire under control. Investigators are looking into the cause.
