(Chagrin Falls) Chagrin Falls is ringing in the New Year in a new way this year. The town is holding a celebration in the square with the midnight lowering of a popcorn ball made with real popcorn from Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop.
The family friendly event will feature free hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies as well as plenty of music and entertainment. The popcorn ball will drop at midnight at Triangle Park. After the ball drops, the town police chief will fire a canon.
Tom Florkiewicz is a Chagrin Falls Township Trustee and says they drew inspiration for the event from a documentary about a possum drop in Brasstown, North Carolina. Florkiewicz says Marion, Ohio also has a popcorn drop, but the Chagrin Falls Popcorn Drop is the only one to use real popcorn for the ball.
Florkiewicz says the mayor, police chief, and village council are all involved in the event. "It's a combination of all the people in Chagrin Falls coming together and having a little celebration."
Florkiewicz says he hopes this year's event will turn into a tradition.
