Three Dead After Border Patrol Chase

Border Patrol Chase Fatal Crash 8 10 2017 10News

The investigation continues into the crash of a vehicle being pursued by border patrol officers Thursday that ended with the deaths of three of the four people in the vehicle.

The chase began after border patrol officers tried to stop an SUV on the southbound 15 near Deer Springs Road after getting a hit on the license plate as being connected to a murder suspect and human smugglers.

The SUV reached speeds of up to 100 mph and crashed through a guard rail and landed in a ravine near Rancho Bernardo.

The CHP says two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to Palomar Medical Center with major injuries. One of them died.

The incident forced the CHP to issue a SigAlert and close all southbound lanes except for the HOV lane for several hours.  Traffic was backed up for several miles.
