Agencies Asked to Investigate Diversion of Public Funds to Left-Wing Groups

The Transparency Foundation has referred its report on the inappropriate use of $6.6 million in taxpayer funds in San Diego County to multiple oversight agencies for investigation — and at least one has confirmed it is opening an investigation.

Last week, the Transparency Foundation released a bombshell report identifying that, following Democrats taking control of several government agencies in 2020, at least $6.6 million in inappropriate taxpayer funding was diverted to Left-wing groups in San Diego county — all while those same groups engaged in significant lobbying, issue advocacy, and political activities.

Since then the Transparency Foundation has referred the matter to a number of government oversight agencies including the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), and the San Diego Grand Jury for immediate investigation.

The Transparency Foundation has confirmed that at least one agency has launched a formal investigation into the funding allegations.

Carl DeMaio, chairman of the Transparency Foundation, said that the news was a step in the right direction for solving the problems outlined in the Foundation’s report.

“We’re hopeful that these oversight agencies will be as concerned as we are about the abuse of these taxpayer funds and will take proper measures to immediately suspend any funds going to high risk political groups in San Diego county currently receiving government funding,” said DeMaio.

“The government allocating these taxpayer funds to political groups is not only inappropriate — it is likely illegal,” DeMaio continued.

“There is no defense for diverting taxpayer funds to political groups while they are lobbying the government, engaging in issue advocacy, or funding political campaigns,” said DeMaio.

“We hope the results of these investigations will further expose any misconduct and start the path to true transparency and accountability in our government,” he continued. “But we can’t continue our work without the support of those that want to see this corruption brought to light.”
