It's time to address the criticism of Shark Week - MERRILL BONUS MOMENT

Lots of criticism of the Discovery Channel over the drama/sensationalism they've added to shark week, myself included. A couple of points for balance in the conversation:
1.) Discovery is not funded with our tax dollars. They are a business and as a business they have responsibilities to their employees as well as investors to keep the money rolling in. 
2.) Despite an outpouring of criticism, the ratings for shark week grow every year. I complain about the mixed message but I'll be watching it again this evening. What they are doing by turning a model of educational documentary programming into edu-drama is working.
3.) For those that rely on one week a year to learn about sharks, are you not interested the other 51 weeks or is your Google broken? 
4.) If your Google isn't broken, do you find yourself following up on what you see on TV with a bit of research on your own? I do. Now, when they run a faux documentary I find myself doing a bit of extra research during the commercials and actually educating myself more than I would if I were sitting like a sponge waiting for the next nugget of info to be hurled at me.
5.) Criticism is good. it mean people are paying attention and care. Criticism is also buzz and buzz is GREAT advertising
6.) There's an anecdote I've heard and whether it's true or not doesn't matter because the point remains salient. ~The head of MTV was asked why they don't play music videos anymore even though everyone that grew up on MTV keeps asking for them? The exec replied "You know, that's not a complaint we ever hear from our 15-24yr old target audience." ~ Just because something doesn't give us what we expect doesn't mean it's bad, it's just different and may have an audience of its own.
