That lawsuit filed against the Petco pet store chain by the family of a 10-year-old Santee boy who died from a disease he got from his pet rat has stirred up a lot of debate.
Everyone agrees Aidan Pankey’s death last year was tragic and sad.
But not everyone agrees on whether it was preventable.
His family claims the Petco store should have known the pet rat Aidan’s grandmother bought for the boy had a dangerous disease called rat-bite fever.
Now when you look at what Petco gives all customers who buy pet rats, it’s pretty clear that there are things you should do and should not do because of the infectious diseases the rodents can carry.
There also are a lot of expert websites out there that urge people to buy their pet rats from breeders and not pet stores, saying those rats are healthier.
But there are a lot of people out there who ask….why get a child a rat for a pet and take any chance at all?
The answer to that question obviously won’t help Aidan and his family, but it might help someone else.
