What questions are you asking today where you work?
Friday’s deadly workplace shooting at the city public works department in Virginia Beach Virginia may have a lot of people in many other cities thinking about their workplace on this Monday morning and asking lots of questions.
How safe is my workplace?Do I know what to do if someone tried to do that where I work? What signs can I look for if there’s an employee where I work who’s just as crazy, evil and dangerous?
Sadly, these are not new questions because the mass shooting in Virginia Beach is just the latest in what has become a repeated event in our country. The Virginia Beach shooting happened just a few weeks after a school shooting in Colorado and the synagogue shooting in Poway.
And because the employee who killed the 12 people in Virginia Beach had worked there for 15 years and was said to have a good job performance record and showed no apparent signs of stress or anger but who did send an email to his boss that morning giving his two weeks’ notice, the police chief says they are looking as deep as they can into the shooter’s personal life to figure out a motive.
And HR and security officials at workplaces everywhere are certainly reviewing their policies and procedures today.
But the answer to ending these terrible shootings may not lie in the HR and Security departments…but in the hearts and minds of those who carry them out.
