The trial of Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher that begins today in San Diego has drawn nationwide attention.
And not just because the President has given indications that he will consider a pardon of Gallagher.
But also because of the unusual developments in the case since the Special Operations Chief was locked up in the brig at MCAS Miramar and then granted a defense motion to be confined in the not as harsh Navy Facility in Balboa Park.
Then just a couple of weeks ago, the military judge who will hear the case took the rare step of removing the lead prosecutor from the case after defense lawyers accused the prosecution of spying on their emails to find out the source of news leaks.
But this case also is unusual because it involves Navy SEALS fighting with Navy SEALS over what happened and what the truth is in the case.
Members of this elite group of warriors, who are trained in Coronado, are taught to be a team, protecting each other’s lives even if it means giving up their own lives to do it.
Depending on what comes out during testimony in Gallagher’s trial, it could possibly shake what people believe about Navy SEALS. But it also could turn out to be a shining moment because the truth, matter what it is, usually is the victor.
