What is unfortunate for Harry Reid, is HE will go down as the guy who made it possible...No matter what his motivation was at the time.
Harry Reid is loooong gone from the Senate, but it is likely you will hear people on the left spitting his name in the next few months, as HE is responsible for changing the rules in the senate that will allow Republicans to get another justice on the Supreme Court.
There will be rending of garments and gnashing of teeth, but this is what happens when you don't consider the long-term consequences of a short-term victory.
Mitch McConnell warned him...but it didn't take.
It was back in 2013 that Reid, the Democrat from Nevada, and Senate Majority Leader, "went nuclear." At the time, Congress was locked in an ugly ideological battle. It really started under Bush, and just kept rolling through the Obama administration, and expanding, with judicial and cabinet nominees being routinely blocked by the opposite party.
Reid is correct, it was grinding the government to a halt. It had been through the Bush administration...and continued When Obama was elected. He explains it, right here:
Alas, Reid's move has left Democrats in a bit of a pickle. The Senate rules that would have made it VERY difficult to replace Kennedy with a conservative, was nuked, and the fallout for them, is now.
President Trump will announce his nominee, and the senate will confirm that nominee BEFORE the November election. And Harry Reid, made that possible in 2013.
