South Carolina Congressman Tried To Bring A Six-Pack To The House Floor

A freshmen Congressman from South Carolina learned that it is against the rules to bring alcohol onto the House floor. Democratic Rep. Joe Cunningham was planning to give the six-pack of local beers as a gift to Oregon Rep. Peter DeFazio (D), who co-chairs the House Small Brewers Caucus. Cunningham joked about the incident on Twitter, saying he was just trying to make some new friends in Washington D.C.

Making friends when you’re a freshman is hard and I thought I’d grease the skids with some Lowcountry beer. Thankfully @RepPeterDeFazio got it in the end! Can I join the beer caucus now?

According to the Post and Courier, the craft beers were from local breweries in the Charleston area, and included "Dead Arm from Coast (a pale ale at 6 percent alcohol by volume), White Thai from Westbrook Brewing Company (a Belgian wheat), and One Claw, (a pale ale) also from Westbrook."

Rep. DeFazio did end up getting the beer and was photographed by Politico reporter Laura Barrón-López with the six-pack as he left for the day.
