Extra Patrols at Places of Worship Following Poway Synagogue Shooting

Authorities were on high alert Sunday after the deadly shooting at the Chabad of Poway where a woman was killed and three others injured in the shooting Saturday.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore tweeted that the department would provide extra patrols at places of worship over the weekend. “We encourage our communities to continue with scheduled events and other activities as normal. The suspect in the Poway incident today has been captured and we believe he acted alone,” the Sheriff’s department said.

A vigil was held Saturday evening at Rancho Bernardo Community Church, 17010 Pomerado Road. People also laid flowers on the street outside the Chabad Community Center, mourning the death of an innocent woman. San Diego Catholic Bishop Robert W. McElroy asked all priests in the diocese to pray at Sunday masses for the victims of the shooting and for the Jewish community.

The shooting happened at Chabad of Poway on the 16000 block of Chabad Way around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the suspected shooter, John Earnest, 19, used an AR-style assault weapon. Witnesses inside the synagogue at the time of the shooting reported hearing more than a dozen shots and say the shooting lasted roughly 20 to 30 seconds.

An off-duty Border Patrol agent inside the synagogue followed the suspect when he tried to run away and shot at him, striking the Earnest’s car.

A 60-year-old woman, identified by friends as Lori Kaye, died from her wounds after being rushed to the hospital. Three other people,34-year-old Almog Peretz, 57-year-old Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein and a juvenile female, whose exact age is unknown at this time, were injured. All three were expected were in stable condition and are expected to be okay.

The 19-year-old suspect was booked on one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. He is scheduled to be in court on May 1.
