What People Are Saying About New Later School Start Time Law in California

The Governor has signed a slew of new bills into law in the last few weeks, but one of them may have more people arguing over it than any other.

It’s the new law that requires that the start of school in California cannot be before 8 a.m. in middle schools and can’t be before 8:30 a.m. in high schools.

And based on the reports, it seems like everyone is talking about it and many are unhappy with it.

Many parents who start their jobs in the morning are saying it is going to make it harder to get to their jobs on time.

Many teachers and school districts are saying it will increase the burden and cost money to change bus routes and pay extra staff to chaperone students who have to arrive early because of their parents’ work schedules.

Those who support it, like the state PTA, point to a report from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that says teenagers should get eight to 10 hours of sleep every night and if they don’t, they’re more likely to be overweight, suffer from depression and more likely to drink, smoke or use drugs.

The sponsor of the later school start time bill that is now law says “Now our work begins to implement this necessary educational and public health reform.”

The way a lot of people are talking, he might have to get up a little earlier, because it may not be as easy as he thinks.
