San Diego Police Shoot Man Under Arrest Downtown

A man under arrest was hospitalized Sunday night, with "non life threatening wounds" after San Diego Police said he slipped out of his handcuffs and got a hold of an officer's gun.

According to police, the 25-year-old Hispanic man was arrested Sunday evening after an incident at a downtown hotel. A hotel security guard reported the man was “acting strange” and threatened him.

Officers took the man to SDPD headquarters on 1401 Broadway, but while inside a patrol car, police said the man somehow freed himself from his handcuffs, broke a plexiglass partition between the backseat and trunk, and then made his way into the trunk area. Police said it was in the trunk were the man located an officer’s backpack that contained a backup handgun.

When officers went to check on the man, they saw that he was still in the vehicle but armed with a gun. Officers drew their weapons but backed up from the car.

According to police, the man “presented the handgun,” causing the officers to feel threatened. At that point, at least three officers fired at least one round, hitting the man while he was still inside the car.
