Times of Change in a Year of Change in San Diego

That common saying about the only thing that stays the same is change has certainly been true in 2020.

The pandemic has changed pretty much everything this year, from where we can go…to what we can do…to with whom we can do it…and even how close we can be to one another.

There have been lots of changes in the way businesses do business, and how schools do school and how churches do church. There have been changes in how we do family reunions and family holidays, weddings and even funerals.

Events that happen every year are not happening this year, from San Diego’s largestconvention in Comic Con to the world’s largest military air show held at Miramar to the college football bowl that has become known as the most exciting, the Holiday Bowl announcing this week, that it’s taking a holiday this year.

And even when things change that do change from time to time, we notice them more and they get more attention.

Take for instance the new look to one of San Diego’s iconic hotels, the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine that’ undergone its first re-design since it opened more than 30 years ago. And as Union Tribune columnist Diane Bell noted this week, not everyone likes the change.

But then most of us don’t like much of any of the changes this year.

And if it’s true that change is the only thing that doesn’t change, then let’s all hope that 2021 brings changes that bring us back to at least close to normal.
