San Diego County Now Under Purple COVID Tier Restrictions

San Diego County is back in the most restrictive, Purple tier on the state's color coded monitoring list.

The increased restrictions going into effect as of 12:01 a.m. Saturday and are in effect for at least three weeks. Under the state’s purple tier, restaurants have to close indoor dining and move outside. Other businesses like gyms have to do the same. So do places of worship. Schools not already open will not be able to open as long as the county is in the purple tier.

The county health department reported 661 new positive cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, a one day record high, and another 620 reported Thursday.

“We have not seen cases this high in months and it’s a clear indication that COVID-19 is widespread,” Wooten said. “These totals also show people are not following the public health recommendations that we know work to prevent getting and passing COVID-19. Coming in the weeks following Halloween, these results are a warning sign that we need to follow public health guidance throughout the upcoming holiday season.”

Because the County’s case rate increased to 7.4, then 8.9 over the past two weeks, the region must stop indoor operations at restaurants, gyms, churches and movie theaters. Retail businesses need to keep customers at 25% of capacity. The county will remain in the Purple Tier for at least three weeks. It won’t be able to advance to the Red Tier unless it posts a case rate below 7 cases per 100,000 residents two weeks in a row.

Here is what the Purple tier means for, restaurants, gyms, churches, theaters and other locations will need to end indoor operations under state guidance.
