Former San Diego Mayor, Kevin Faulconer has signed a petition to recall California Governor Newsom. In an interview, Faulconer said that there is "a growing frustration throughout California," and "we need a change now."
The city's former mayor sent a Tweet on January 2, 2021 inviting others to join him in signing the recall petition. His message:
It’s a new year. We need a new governor.
Jobs are leaving, homelessness is skyrocketing, and the state can’t even issue unemployment checks to people struggling right now to get by.
California is better than this.
On December 29, 2020 the petition's website stated that 911,000 signatures had been secured, states that
The petition claims that Newsom "has failed Californians," stating that he "must go" because his administration has not resolved major issues like unaffordable housing, record homelessness, rising crime, failing schools, and exploding pension debt. It also states that Newsom is responsible for the state's "locked down population."
As of December 29, 2020 the petition had received 911,000 signatures. 1,459,709 signatures will be needed by mid-March of 2021 to authorize a recall election.
Should the governor be recalled, Faulconer confirmed that he would "absolutely" run for governor. He also announced that he has established an exploratory committee to determine whether a bid for the office of California Governor in the 2022 regular election makes sense
