Another Record High Number of Deaths Reported in San Diego County

San Diego County said Friday that on January 21st, the highest number of COVID-19 related deaths were reported in one day since the start of the pandemic.

The newly reported deaths surpass the previous one-day total set Jan. 19, when 65 deaths were reported. County health officials say the most recent reported deaths occurred from Dec. 16 to Jan. 21.

Among those, 61 of the deaths occurred between Jan. 15 and Jan. 21 and with the 67 deaths that were previously reported during the same period, the total jumps to 128. County health officials say these are people who likely got sick during the holidays. The latest report raised the total number of deaths in the county to 2,301.

  • 49,562 tests were reported to the County on Jan. 21, and the percentage of new positive cases was 6%.
  • The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 10.7%. Target is less than 8.0%.
  • 2,847 cases were reported to the County on Jan. 21st..
  • 8,673 or 3.9% of all cases have required hospitalization.
