California Updates Capacity Rules For Places Of Worship

After several court rulings, California has updated rules around capacity limits at places of worship during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, reports KGTV.

Starting April 12, the state Department of Public Health now says "location and capacity limits on places of worship are not mandatory but are strongly recommended."

Officials went on to say that, "All other restrictions in the guidance remain in place."

For San Diego, which is in the orange tier, capacity limits at places of worship or now recommended to limited at 50% capacity for indoor events.

According to KGTV, activities like singing, chanting, and playing wind instruments are allowed but are still subject to safety measures and restrictions.

Based on the state's COVID-19 tiered system, these are the recommended guidelines for places of worship:

  • Purple tier (widespread): Outdoor or indoor with modifications. Indoor activities are strongly discouraged and should be limited to 25% of capacity
  • Red tier (substantial): Indoor with modifications. Indoor activities should be limited to 25% of capacity
  • Orange tier (moderate): Indoor with modifications. Indoor activities should be limited to 50% of capacity
  • Yellow tier (minimal): Indoor with modifications. Indoor activities should be limited to 50% of capacity; Singing, chanting, and playing wind instruments
