Decades Old Mystery Solved Because Of California Drought Conditions

California's severe drought may have been the reason remains from a plane crash in 1965 were discovered, reports the Guardian.

An underwater surveying company was testing equipment in Folsom Lake near Sacramento when they detected something shocking.

Workers with the Seafloor Systems were able to further inspect the mystery object and discovered it was an airplane.

“We could see the fuselage here, we could see the right wing. We could see the tail,” the company's CEO Josh Tamplin told KRON-4.

While it's unclear which plane was found, it did appear to resemble the plane that was lost 56 years ago.

Many local news outlets speculate that it's the Piper Comanche 250 that crashed near Folsom Dam after a midair collision on New Year's Day in 1965.

According to CBS Sacramento, only the body of the plane's pilot has been recovered. The plane and the three passengers have been missing for several decades.

The plane was found in one of the deepest parts of the lake and many say it was only possible because of the historically low water levels in Folsom Lake.

During California's drought in 2014, dive teams and a sonar boat attempted to locate the wreckage but were unsuccessful.

“I think it’s amazing that after all this time,” Seafloor’s Tyler Atkinson told KRON-4, “there’s been a lot of research and a lot of effort put into finding this for the family and also to retrieve what no one knew was down there.”
