The Coronado Unified School District Board has decided to fire Coronado High's head basketball coach during an emergency, closed-session school board meeting, reports NBC7.
The emergency meeting was called after students threw tortillas at players from Orange Glen of Escondido at a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championship game over the weekend.
After the incident, many parents and students pointed out that the action was racist since a majority of the athletes on the Orange Glen team are Latino.
A public session followed the closed-session meeting. The session included comments from players, parents, and community members.
"This was a racial incident no matter how it was cut," said community activist Yusef Miller while speaking to the board. "I don't care who stands there and says otherwise. I don't care if they are Black, white or Latino. I don't care what race they are. This was wrong and unjust. I don't care where it comes from."
In a unanimous vote, the board decided to fire Cornado head coach J.D. Laaperi.
Furthermore, City News Service reports that the San Diego NAACP is calling on the CIF to ban two players who tossed tortillas at Orange Glen, ban the parents who brought the tortillas, name both schools co-champions or strip Coronado High of its regional title.
