October Brings A Feeling of Preparedness

You can probably feel it.  There’s that October feeling in the air in San Diego.

The days are generally cooler and the length of daylight is getting shorter.

But that October feeling also is often drier.  And with the Santa Ana conditions this week bringing us the low humidity and the gusty winds, this month also brings us an uneasy feeling.  A feeling that a brush fire could break out.

Historically, most of the worst fires we’ve had in the last 30 years, the ones we all remember the most, happened in October.

The wildfires in October 2003 and October of 2007 are among the worst the entire state has seen in terms of size and the number of homes lost.

Thankfully, things have changed since those big fires in the way firefighters fight them and the equipment they have to do it.

But as we all experience that October feeling this month, we also all need to be extra careful about doing anything that can spark a fire especially during the Santa Ana’s.  And that we all know what to do prevent and prepare for wildfires.

Cal Fire and other fire agencies know how to do their jobs.  We just need to make sure all of us know how to do ours.

For info on how to be prepared.
