There are a lot of questions will come out of the protests that have been going on across the country for one week now.
While the protests have been or have started as peaceful demonstrations of very valid and very serious concerns that people of all colors have, the violence that has been happening are raising lots of questions.
Why do the looters loot? Why do the vandals vandalize? Why do the arsonists burn buildings?
And why do protests that start peacefully and involve walks, marches, and speeches at rallies turn into violence?
And who are the people who carry out these acts of violence and why?
One caller to KOGO who took part in the peaceful protest in La Mesa last weekend who left before the rioting began said those who carried out all those acts of violence Saturday night were criminals, not protesters.
She said what they did only hurt their cause. Her words may remind some of something the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr once said:
“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy…In fact, violence merely increases hate...Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
