Why Men Don't Wear Face Masks as Often as Women

What is it about masks? We’ve been under a county public health order for a while now to wear face coverings when we are out in public and around other people.

The governor of California made it an order statewide last week. You’re required to wear one in any store you go or any restaurant you go to and for many weeks now, federal, state and local health officials have told us the evidence shows that wearing masks or face coverings is effective in preventing or at least slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

Masks have become so much a part of life these days, you can find racks and racks of custom masks, designer masks and ones with movie characters on them. And yet masks are clearly not popular with everyone.

A new study has found that men are more likely than women not to wear face masks. The researchers say, more men than women say wearing a face covering is shameful, not cool, a sign of weakness, and a stigma. And men more than women in the study say they believe that they will be relatively unaffected by the virus.

And it’s not only gender differences. Now we argue about masks like we argue about everything else that becomes a political issue, and here in 2020, masks have become that too.

There are those who those who confess to being COVID cowards and wear masks all the time and then there are those who don’t wear masks who call themselves COVID freedom fighters.

So face masks are likely to continue to be debated until the time comes when they’re not needed and we all hope that time is not too far off.
