The Other Vaccine We Need as Doses Begin to Arrive

The first doses of the first vaccine have arrived. Pfizer’s vaccine is now being injected into the arms of front line health care workers.

And Moderna’s vaccine is expected to be approved soon and then more vaccine doses will be on their way.

California’s governor, in welcoming the arrival of the first doses of vaccine, said they can’t some soon enough.

And he’s right. They can’t come soon enough. They can’t come soon enough to open up businesses or re-open schools or lift travel restrictions or make families and friends feel safe enough to get together for the holidays as they usually would be doing.

While more vaccines are coming, and while they have been developed and are being approved in history-making record time, it is still expected to take several months yet, if not into next summer before everyone who wants one can get one. And for enough of those who are fearful of getting it to become less fearful so that that herd immunity will finally put this pandemic behind us.

After nearly 10 months now of the virus having invaded our world and upended our daily lives, we want it to happen now or at least more quickly than several more months before the vaccines are into our arms so we can get on with getting back to normal. With cases still rising and public health orders still in place, what we really need now is a vaccine for impatience!
