The tragedy in the tunnel at San Diego City College has helped surface the problem of homelessness once again.
The problem goes as far back as the 1960’s when Frank Curran was mayor of San Diego for whom the area above the tunnel where the crash occurred is named.
The city’s current Mayor Todd Gloria, a former city council member and state assembly member has had the homeless problem to deal with for years and now it’s front and center. Mayor Gloria said Tuesday he “will not turn a blind eye to homelessness.” And said, “We cannot and we will not turn our back on those who died.”
So, what will be and what should be done to prevent people who are homeless from sleeping on sidewalks that put their lives at risk and from setting up encampments that can often lead to brush fires that put the lives of others at risk?
The problem of homelessness is not an easy one to solve. The fact that no mayor and no city leaders have yet to find an answer to it is clear proof of that. But it can only be solved when we are ready to do what it may take to solve it. It will cost a lot of money to help the many different kinds of people who are homeless; people without jobs, without money and many with mental health and addiction problems.
But most of all it will take less fighting over what to do and instead working together to determine what to do and then do it!
