Good Time for Back to School Time

The month of April is usually the month every year that kids are starting to look forward to the end of the school year in a few weeks.

But now this month of April here in 2021, it’s back to school time for thousands of kids in San Diego County, the vast majority of whom have been out of school since March of 2020.

San Diego Unified students head back to the classroom for the first time in a year next week and other local school districts that don’t open classrooms next week, are expected to be opening them again by mid-summer after California’s color-coded COVID restrictions are expected to be lifted on June 15th as announced by the Governor this week.

While there will still be a good number of students who will be learning online from home for a while yet, by late August or early September, it looks like all schools will be open for what could be a pretty close thing to a normal year of school for all these kids whose last year has been anything from normal.

Having talked to a physician this week a Rady Children’s Hospital, it is clear that the impact on kids’ mental, social and even physical health since they’ve been out of school, isolated from their friends and even family members, has been significant.

Our kids being the future of who we are as a society means our kids will continue to need the support of not only their parents but also their teachers, people at their church and even each other…to help them adjust to a return to normal after a year that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
