Now it’s all about the numbers. As of today, everyone in California who is 16 and over is now eligible to become vaccinated from the COVID virus.
And that’s good news. But while a lot of people, mostly older people, have been vaccinated, a lot more people have not. Here are the numbers; statewide more than 9-million people have been fully vaccinated, which means there are still close to 30 million who are not.
In San Diego County, about 750-thousand people are now fully vaccinated, which means that with an estimated population in the county of those who are 16 years old and old being about two-and-a-half million, 1.7 million are not.
And of course, there is now expected to be a surge in appointments to get the vaccine by everyone who wants to prevent themselves from getting it and prevent another surge of the virus.
So even with the number of vaccines and doses expected to grow despite the hold on the J&J vaccine, it will still take a few months before enough of the population has been fully vaccinated to reach what public health officials want to reach in every county and every state, herd immunity.
And while there are still some who say they won’t get the vaccine, there are increasing efforts to convince them to get the shot and not get misled by a lot of false information on social media. The more people who are vaccinated means the more quickly we can get to the end of the pandemic and back to normal.
