How Pandemic Has Made Us Technologically Smarter

The conventional wisdom about how going through difficult times can make you stronger seems to have been confirmed in a new study.

The study, conducted by OnePoll, on behalf of YMCA, says going through the COVID-19 pandemic has forced a lot of older adults to become more self-sufficient.

The survey of 2,000 Americans over the age of 57 showed that 56 percent of them say they have become more independent over the past year. And 70-percent of them say they expect it to help them in life moving forward.

Close to 60 percent of those in this survey said technology has allowed them to stay in touch with family and friends during all the lockdowns and about 55 percent said that figuring out how to use it made it possible for them to get the essential items they need delivered and feel more secure.

Nearly two-thirds of the older adults said they think learning technology has even had a positive impact on their overall health and well-being, with well over half saying that learning how to use technology has also helped them from feeling lonely.

And at least one third of these older adults say that of the three different aspects of their overall health, maintaining their mental health will be their top priority having gone through these last 14 months.

The findings of this study, like others. revealing once again that the pandemic has changed a lot of attitudes about how we look at life and what’s important.
