San Diego hasn’t gotten much attention in the national media over the years when it comes to sports unless it’s something bad.
An NFL team abandoning the city for the L-A, or about losing out on getting a big time soccer team, or about embarrassingly bad losses by the Padres in the only two World Series they’ve been in since becoming an MLB team in 1969.
But now a lot of the national sports media attention is on the Padres. Because now they are one of top teams in baseball, not only in wins, with some of the best players in baseball including the one who may be the best player in baseball and one who attracts the most attention in baseball. Not since the hey days of the greatest Padre of all time, Tony Gwynn, have the Padres attracted nearly this much interest.
And now the Padres are about to be able to welcome back as many fans as they can fit into Petco Park with the news that after June 15th, there won’t be any COVID restrictions, including the wearing of masks, at outdoor events with assigned seating. The Padres are sure to be playing in front of a packed Petco Park on most days and they are sure to be getting even more national attention.
One of the national broadcasters on one of the nationally broadcast Padres games a few days ago, said the Padres had reignited sports in San Diego.
All of this comes at a good time for San Diego, with vaccinations increasing and the cases of the virus decreasing. And it has helped us put the bad feelings about that football team that we used to love in San Diego behind us. What was their name again?
