It can be easy to become worried when we hear news about the COVID pandemic, even when the news is good.
Not surprising probably, given the fact that we have been living with news about this virus virtually every day of our lives since early 2020. And there were things to worry about certainly. But now that vaccinations have drastically reduced new infections and almost all of the COVID restrictions have been lifted, there is less worry. There is still some worry though, with the news stories about the newest of the strains of the virus, the Delta variant.
But it is important to keep things in perspective. Yes, there are more cases of the Delta strain, but the numbers are very small.
San Diego County’s 18 cases among 3.3 million residents means a rate of about 0.53 cases per 100,000 residents. In L-A County where they are recommending that even vaccinated people still wear masks indoors, which San Diego is not, there have been 123 cases, a rate of 1.2 per 100,000 residents.
And we have to remember that the vaccines are just as effective against this Delta variant as they have been against other variants and the original form of the virus.
For people who are vaccinated, there is little worry. For people who are not yet vaccinated, there will remain some worry.
And while the cable news channels need to inform us of whatever news there is about the virus, they should not unduly inflame the news about it...because then we can become unnecessarily worried about it.
