The San Diego Unified board president says the Delta variant of the COVID virus is a big concern.
But lots of school leaders say despite that, one of the safest places for kids to be is in school due to the rules and procedures in place. No one argues that it is not educationally, socially and mentally better for kids to be in school as opposed to the distance learning that went on all last school year for most kids.
But with a thousand or even 2-thousand new daily infections being reported by the county, a lot of parents are still not worry-free. It helps having mask mandates in the vast majority of schools and the new vaccination mandates for all public and private school teachers and staff.
And with county leaders announcing their recommendation that all employers, of all kinds, require proof of vaccination and have their workers get weekly COVID tests if they don’t, it means all the kids under 12 who cannot yet get the vaccine, will better protected as more of everyone 12 and older gets vaccinated.
With the higher number of cases, increasingly crowded hospitals and the rising number of deaths, many now among unvaccinated younger adults, the situation has become more serious.
There will be some who don’t and won’t like the mask and vaccination requirements and may not follow the rules to help keep themselves and others safe. But hearing from those who have lost a family member, a friend, or a co-worker to COVID might change their minds.
