That fire that broke out this weekend in the far northern part of San Diego County sent a lot of smoke into the sky near Camp Pendleton.
With what is going on in Afghanistan and the emotional impact the deadly attack last week had on Marines, their families and many in San Diego, there were some initial fears among some when they saw all that dark smoke that it could be not a wildfire but an attack here, at a military base here in our country. The marine base quickly sent out a tweet that it was a fire and it was not on the base.
It quickly became apparent that what everyone saw in the sky was smoke from yet another wildfire in California. And like many of the fires that break out during these days of warm temperatures and serious drought, this fire grew quickly. Within just a few short hours, from the initial report of 20 acres, to 250 acres to nearly 1500 acres.
Burning in parts of the Cleveland National Forest, like the fires in Northern California burning in areas of lots of vegetation this summer, the video from Cal Fire of the flames and the fight against them showed how ferocious some of these fires are.
And just like the Marines and other service members who volunteer to put themselves at risk to keep us safe, thousands of firefighters in California are doing the same right now to protect us and our property.
From the battlefield to the fire lines, we salute all of our heroes.
