The Message from Maya Millete Tragedy: End Domestic Violence

The story of what the investigation found into what happened to Maya ‘May’ Millete is very sad and also very disturbing.

To hear the telling of that story by San Diego County District Attorney Sumer Stephan was frightening. As the San Diego Union Tribune recounted it after Tuesday’s news conference.

“Maya “May” Millete wanted a divorce. Her husband did not. Authorities say Larry Millete sought help from spellcasters — he wanted magic to make his wife want to stay…his wishes grew darker. He asked that she be incapacitated, that she have an accident, broken bones to keep her at home.”

In telling that story, the D-A said she was not familiar with these so-called spellcasters. Most of us listening probably weren’t either. Sounds like something out of dark novel.

It is hard to comprehend someone getting these spellcasters to help him hurt someone who he eventually killed according to the investigation. And it is hard to understand how May’s husband took their 4-year-old daughter with him in the car that the D-A said carried the body of her dead mother.

The story is indeed unsettling and tragic. But it is a story that sadly happens too often. And with the arrest of this husband for the killing of this wife in this case coming during October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this story should make us all more aware and more committed to preventing these terrible things from happening.
