Masks Coming Off But Can We Do It Together?

The masks at many schools have become to come off, now that California’s statewide school mask mandate has been lifted.

Some school districts, including the two largest in the county, the San Diego Unified and Sweetwater Union High School districts, are not lifting their mask mandate until April 4th.

But even at those schools where the masks were no longer required as of Monday, there was still a sizable number of students who kept their masks on. They and/or their parents apparently not yet comfortable about going to school without their masks.

When the other school districts lift their mask mandates early next month, you have to wonder how many of those students still keep their masks on. And we also must hope that the kids who want to still wear masks are not picked on by those who are not.

Some of that happened even earlier and is still happening some. But that’s what can happen when politics infects the pandemic as it did early on during this health crisis.

As we enter the third official year of the pandemic and hopefully the end of it very soon, let’s hope that we all can remember what many quickly forgot during the early months of the pandemic, that we are in this together. And act like it.
