What the Forecast Means for Another Forecast

The forecast for an early dose of mid-summer like weather means hot temperatures and strong winds.

And with it comes another forecast that’s out about the drought. The hot dry weather this early in the year is not good news for easing the drought conditions here in San Diego and up and down the state.

Most counties in California are in moderate or severe drought status. And unless the typical May gray and June gloom weather brings us lots of rain, the drought forecast is not going to improve.

And this week we got the report about California's mountain snowpack at 38% of average…the lowest mark since the end of the last drought in 2015 and only the second time the snowpack has been that low ahead of summer going back to 1988.

And we already know what this could all mean. A greater chance of wildfires and a greater chance of more severe restrictions on water use.

Gov. Newsom has already sent out an order for cities and local water agencies to go to their drought contingency plans which could include cutbacks in water use with restrictions on things like sprinkling and car washing. And unless the drought forecast gets better, we could be asked to reduce our overall water use by a certain percentage.

So, while, after two years, the easing of the pandemic has most of us out and about, it looks like this year could be much more about the drought.
