It has now been 100 days since Russian forces began their invasion of Ukraine.
What the president of Russia called, and stills calls, a special military operation. It’s also called “Putin’s war.” A war that many Russian citizens did not want with thousands of them thrown in jail for protesting in the streets.
The protests are now silent. While experts on Russia say there are millions of citizens there who oppose the war and don’t want Putin as their president, they are afraid and don’t want to face years in prison if they even use the word “war” or “invasion” to describe what is happening in Ukraine.
But that's what is happening and is likely to continue for some time now beyond this 100-day mark, and last for weeks or months or even longer.
It’s believed tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens have been killed, maybe even more.
Fierce fighting goes on in the eastern part of Ukraine. More weapons from the U.S and countries in Europe arrive in Ukraine every day. But the Russian president, who some think is seriously ill, or just seriously evil, shows no signs of ending his war.
And yet many people in Ukraine are celebrating today. Because Ukraine’s soccer team won a victory over Scotland and could win the World Cup.
The coach for their team dedicated the win to quote “the armed forces in the trenches and in the hospitals…those in Ukraine who suffer every day.”
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the soccer team for what he called “two hours of happiness".
And today most of the world is now hoping that Ukraine wins more big victories not only on the soccer field and but also on the battlefield!
