Why Seaport Village is Not Sailing into the Sunset Yet

Thousands of the visitors to San Diego for Comic-Con this week are likely to spend some time strolling through one of the city’s most loved areas for locals.

It's been around longer than "the Con" has been at the San Diego Convention Center.

It's Seaport Village, the shops, the restaurants and the carousel nestled along San Diego Bay just past the USS Midway. It’s been a must see for the families of San Diegans visiting from out of town since it first opened in 1980.

In recent years, Seaport Village, has been shaken after plans to replace it with a huge and controversial development called Seaport San Diego. That news a decade ago turned out to be premature but it led to leases being ended and some shops leaving Seaport Village.

The plans for a new development ran into big obstacles, including environmental and earthquake fault concerns and not least among them, how this huge project with tall hotels and an observation tower could harm the views of the Bay.

This week, San Diego Port Commissioners are reviewing the latest plan by the developer. And reports say the new vision for the new Seaport San Diego is downsized a bit with more open space.

It will be several years before Seaport Village becomes Seaport San Diego.

So for now, we who have enjoyed it, can still enjoy it and support the shops and restaurants in that quaint village along the Bay before it sails into the sunset and something very different is anchored there.
