The speech Wednesday by Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska, the first wife of a foreign leader ever to address members of Congress, was emotional and powerful.
The wife of the Ukrainian President saying, “An unprovoked invasive terrorist war is being waged against my country. Russia is destroying our people.” As her voice and her interpreter’s voice cracked at times from the emotion, she showed photos and shared stories of several of the thousands of children who have been killed by Russian missiles and bombs.
Ukraine’s First Lady saying, “No matter what positions and titles we reach in our lives…we first remain part of our family. The “great truth of our life” she called it. And she said, “Our family represents the whole world for us, and we’d do everything to preserve it.”
To do that, she pleaded with Congress to provide her country with an air defense systems, “in order for rockets not to kill children in their strollers … and kill entire families,” as she put it. And invoking some of the words of the Declaration of Independence, so that Ukrainians can have "life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness".
After six months of war in Ukraine, it looks like the members of the United States Congress have a decision to make.
