Questions About the Widespread Heat Wave in U.S. and Europe

Asking about the weather is a common question to ask when talking to family or friends in different parts of the country or even in other countries.

This summer the answer to that question is hot, very hot. The current heat wave across much of the U.S. and across much of Europe has been a record setter. And we’re not even halfway through summer.

From the inland areas of San Diego County where temperatures are nearing 120 degrees, to the almost daily temperatures in the 100’s in Texas, to the upper 90’s in the northeastern U.S. where it rarely gets that hot, even in the summer, this heat wave of 2022 is making news.

In London, bridges are being wrapped in tin foil to reflect the heat, wildfires have broken out across Italy and elsewhere.

This week’s MIT Technology Review at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where the smartest people in the world study and do research, says, “Millions of people are now experiencing the effects of climate change firsthand” … “scorching crops, knocking out power, fueling wildfires, buckling roads and runways, and likely killing thousands across Europe alone.”

And these MIT folks say lots of questions are now being asked and now being studied:

Questions such as:  Is climate change unfolding faster than scientists had expected? Are these extreme events more extreme than studies had predicted they would be?

The answers to those questions are ones we probably all would like to know.
