It’s as clear as a glass of water. The on-going drought in California and some other western states has already trickled down to millions of people.
But the latest news about the low water levels in lake Mead and lake Powell and the cutbacks in Colorado River water to Arizona and Nevada raises the potential of mandated water cutbacks down the road.
As you’ve heard us reporting, the San Diego’s water supply is not currently threatened and we’re in better shape due to the long-term investments the Count Water Authority has made along with the desalination plant in Carlsbad and raising the San Vicente Dam in the East County to increase water supplies.
And long term, there is San Diego’s Pure Water, once referred to as toilet to tap water, that is coming at some point.
But county water officials are still recommending voluntary water conservation; the usual things, shorter showers, less outdoor watering, and other things that we can do to not waste water.
With hotter weather these days and not much rain in California, there are worries that if both of those conditions remain for a long time, the time may come when mandatory cutbacks happen in the state.
Living in California will always mean some droughts. For now, it may not be time to have to worry about water, but it’s always time to be water wise.
