Worries About Power Grid Making Many Californians Even Hotter

Many who have lived in San Diego for decades say this heat wave is the most intense one they can remember.

And the temperature records that have been set during the day and overnight are evidence. One of the big problems of course has been how to keep cool when it’s so hot.

The big box stores have been selling more portable fans and air conditioners, more people have been going to the beach, movie theaters and the new indoor shopping malls to stay cool. There are even tips on TV news about soaking your feet in ice or even putting your bedsheets in the freezer first before you lay down.

And lot of people are also having problems staying cool emotionally when a new flex alert or an energy emergency is declared as we saw on Labor Day.

We’ve been told if not enough people turn off appliances and turn up the temp on air conditioners from 4pm-10pm, there will be a good chance of those rolling blackouts when some neighborhoods will see their electricity cut off for a while to protect the power grid.

No one wants that to happen, but it could today with the state’s energy officials say that demand could reach 51,145 megawatts, the highest ever. A lot of Californians are boiling under the collar over the idea of power blackouts when they are already paying a lot for electricity and a lot in taxes.

If there are rolling blackouts, California’s political leaders may be sweating long after things cool down.
