Cliff Notes: Why There's Still Rough Sailing for Seaport Village Makeover

The approval by San Diego Port commissioners to move to the next step toward a major makeover of Seaport Village may sound like it means one of San Diego’s and visitors’ most popular spots is on its way to being torn down.

But this is just a step and the massive re-do of the area along the Bay where Seaport Village sits is still several years away from happening if it ever does.

The 3.6-billion-dollar plan will now undergo an environmental review and that in itself will take a considerable amount of time. But the ultimate decision will come down to what the California Coastal Commission, the final authority, thinks of the project. And so far, the staff of that powerful commission has not been too crazy about the plans for the plan and its impact on San Diego’s waterfront.

One port commissioner told the San Diego Union Tribune after the vote, ““There’s no progress without disruption.”

There already has been disruption over the last six years of start and stop proposals over Seaport Village that have dragged along as some shops there closed, and then reopened or new ones came as things first appeared to be happening, only to have things go nowhere.

But progress can look very different among different people. Something will happen at Seaport Village at some point down the road, but history tells us it may not be the plan as is which may still hit some strong waves against it.
