Why Long Thanksgiving Weekend Means More Now

The long Thanksgiving weekend over the years has become a string of special days.

Today is Black Friday, named for the day that used to be the day known as simply the busiest shopping day of the year when retailers went into the black for the year as the holiday shopping season officially begins.

Tomorrow is known as small business Saturday, when holiday shoppers are encouraged to shop at local small businesses to support them.

Sunday is the day known as the busiest travel day of the long weekend as families leave grandma’s house and head back home.

Monday is now labelled and promoted as Cyber Monday when online retailers offer deals for holiday shoppers.

And Tuesday, since 2012, has been known as Giving Tuesday, which was created to promote giving to others or donating to a good cause.

We all know going as far back as Biblical times that it is better to give than to receive. And studies have shown there are healthful emotional and even physical benefits by doing so.

That’s maybe the best part of what the long Thanksgiving weekend has become. And what it really should be, all about giving.
