Getting Back To Normal While Still Not Normal

Has normal finally returned to the holiday season in San Diego?

After many of the traditional events during the Christmas holiday season were cancelled the last two years because of the pandemic…most if not all of the annual events in San Diego are back.

December Nights in Balboa Park was back last weekend and this weekend, the holiday boat parades in Mission Bay and San Diego Bay are sailing again.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds are lit up again for the Snow and Glow Holiday Festival, Jingle Bells at the World-Famous San Diego Zoo is underway, the sounds of Carols by Candlelight and other Christmas concerts fill the air again…and of course, the Grinch is doing his thing at the Old Globe and other Christmas stories are on stage around the county.

And lots of us from now through the month are going places, getting together and spending time with friends and family. It’s almost started to feel as if things are back to normal after the long pandemic.

But we were reminded this week, that the COVID virus is still around and so is the flu and so are the usual cold viruses like RSV. And unfortunately the numbers of cases of all these bugs have been rising and health officials say they expect that to continue.

So while things are getting back to normal, it’s smart to be smart about it and do what we normally have done for decades, to avoid getting sick during the holidays. Wash your hands, cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze and yes it’s still okay to even wear a mask at times if you want because thanks to the pandemic, that’s more normal now than it used to be.
